Tradie Tips: The Importance of Keeping Mentally and Physically Healthy as a TradieĀ

This month, weā€™re celebrating Menā€™s Health Week at CRA, and looking forward to the upcoming Tradies National Health Month in August. As a team mostly made up of male tradies, weā€™re keenly aware of the difficulties facing men and tradies when it comes to maintaining physical and mental health. Tradies donā€™t just get important work done, theyā€™re also our fathers, brothers, sons, partners, and friends, and we want to see them live long and full lives.

So, weā€™ve rounded up our favourite tips and Tradie Tips to stay happy and healthy while enjoying fulfilling careers.

Why is it important to be physically and mentally healthy as a tradie?

Letā€™s face it: long hours and hard labour are all in a dayā€™s work for a tradie. But they take their toll over time. Did you know that 69% of tradies believe that being sore is a normal part of their work? Plus, if youā€™re struggling day-to-day with pain, thereā€™s a good chance your mental health isnā€™t so crash hot either. So, what can you and your mates do to stay mentally and physically healthy?

3 tips for keeping your mental health in great shape as a tradie

1. Build strong friendships with your mates

Having good friends means that if one of you is going through a rough patch, youā€™ve got people you trust to chat to and lean on.

2. Love your work

Being in a job you actually enjoy, working with a crew you can trust and genuinely love being around is a great mental health boost.

3. Reach out to the experts

Let’s face it: far too many tradies are still resistant to the idea of seeing their GP or a psychologist for help with their heads. But when just one chat could turn your life around, what are you waiting for?

3 tips for staying physically fit as a tradie

1. Hit the gym

Resistance training like lifting weights or other gym exercises can build muscles that makes physical work less painful and reduces your risk of injury.

2. Reduce the booze

A cheeky bevvy with the boys after work is a welcome treat, but regular drinking can affect your day-to-day life, from leaving you feeling groggy, dusty and dehydrated in the mornings, to hurting your relationships with the people you love.

3. Quit smoking

Tradies are smoking at a much higher rate than the rest of the population. When you quit smoking, your taste and smell improves in just 72 hours, and your risk of heart disease will be halved in a year.

How CRA supports our staffā€™s mental and physical health

We believe weā€™re responsible for building a team of great mates that build each other up as they work together every day. We provide our crew with plenty of opportunities to grow closer as a team, incredible training and development opportunities to help them feel fulfilled in their roles, and we offer pre-paid counselling sessions for our team to encourage them to seek help if they need it.

Itā€™s always a good time to start prioritising your health so you can live a long and happy life with your friends and family. So, what are you waiting for?
